The History Group visited the Appleton Area Archaeological Research Project (AAARP) on Thursday, 17th June 2021.
The group had a very privileged and enjoyable visit to the excavation site of the old medieval manor by Besselsleigh Church. Luckily the heavy rain held off while Dr. Jane Harrison, Excavation Leader, gave us an outline of the activities so far and told us about some of the exciting finds in the two pits. Some local residents and members of the history group have been taking part in the dig and have been joined by archaeology students from Oxford’s Department of Continuing Education. Finds date from the 16th-18th centuries, although there is also evidence of medieval pottery and Roman tiles.
All the finds will be carefully cleaned and investigated and, once Covid regulations allow, we hope Jane will come to the village to present the results to all those interested.
Thank you Jane for such an interesting evening.
