Village Hall Pre-School Survey

15th November 2022

The Village Hall Committee is pleased that so many village households have taken the time to
provide considered responses to the recent survey in connection with the proposal to make
alterations to the current configuration of the village hall to facilitate the establishment of a pre-
school there. 85 responses were received representing a 22.7% return. Of those 53 were in favour,
26 against and 6 that we would categorise as contradictory.

The village hall committee and the pre-school working party will be working together to progress the
proposal and will provide further updates as matters progress.

Jim Holloway

9th November 2022

We are sad to report that Jim Holloway died peacefully on Friday 4th November 2022 aged 92.

Jim Holloway’s funeral will be held at the South Oxfordshire Crematorium and Memorial Park, Garford, Near Abingdon OX13 5PA on Monday 21st November at 3pm and afterwards at La Fontana in East Hanney, Wantage OX12 0HP.

All are welcome to attend either the service and/ or the wake and Gary Holloway asks that you contact him at either by email on grholloway88@gmail.com or on his mobile 07802 754214 so that the family knows numbers attending.

Jim was an Appleton person through-and-through, having moved to the village when he was two years of age. His father was the Magdalen College Game Keeper and the family lived at Keepers House.

After attending school at Appleton and then Royce’s in Abingdon he began a career in retail management with J Sainsbury.

In 1971 Jim, and his wife Pat, purchased the Appleton Village Shop and they became an integral part of village life until selling up and retiring in 1991.

Pat and Jim thoroughly enjoyed their retirement years spending time with their six children, twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Pat predeceased Jim just as Lockdown started.

We offer our sincere condolences to the family.

Jubilee Map

The Jubilee map of Appleton

20th October 2022

The Appleton with Eaton History Group’s historical map was displayed in the village hall at last June’s Jubilee celebrations. The next step is to raise the funds to mount the map beside the War Memorial on a durable lectern. To stand the test of time it must be printed on a metallic surface, mounted in a strong steel frame, and set in a concrete base. The overall cost, from design to completion of the associated website, will be approximately £5000. Half this sum has already been raised thanks to the generosity of a small number of individuals.

With the support of the Parish Council, the History Group would like the map to serve as Appleton’s tribute to seventy years of service by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with a fund-raising campaign from within the community. We need to raise a further £2,500, which will cover the balance to mount the lectern, and eventually construct a website describing walks around the community. Any surplus when the campaign is finished will be made over to causes identified by the Parish Council as worthy community projects.

It is usual for gifts to vary in size and we hope everyone will feel able to join in at an appropriate level. There will be an acknowledgement board in the Hall, and a note on the map itself marking the community’s contribution. Beyond Appleton’s gift to the Queen’s memory, the map will help everyone, and perhaps most notably young people, to develop an awareness of the roots of the very local parts of their community, why it is where it is, how it has grown up, and what it offers them.
